FOSTER PROGRAM DETAILS AND APPLICATION

Out of State fostering has been long considered for our organization, and to kick off 2014, we are excited to announce our Foster Program!

We are actively seeking Foster Caregivers on the East Coast!

Our primary goal through our Foster Program is not only to enrich the lives of the animals rescued in need of placement and be able to provide said animals with a safe, loving, caring environment until such time they are adopted, but to also better serve our potential adopters all in an effort to maximize our adoption rate to help the many more animals in need while still maintaining our focus for successful, quality adoptions.

Potential Fosters will be required to go through the same screening approval process as our adoptive parents to appropriately place animals into foster care the same way we would place any animal into an adoptive home. A home inspection will be conducted for all potential Foster Caregiver's and proof of residency with a matching ID must be provided at the time of the Home Inspection to confirm information provided on your submitted application.

The Approval Process will include the following:

*Submission of a detailed Application
*Reference Background Checks (veterinary and/or personal)
*Phone Interview
*Home Inspection
*Proof of Residency with a matching ID must be shown at the time of the Home Inspection

Additionally, Foster Caregivers must reside within close proximity to a partnering Petco store and within close proximity to a volunteer or a direct representative of AFTLOA to more adequately serve our Foster Caregivers, their Foster Animals, and to be there if a concern should arise or if a Foster Animal is in need of veterinary care or assistance.

Foster Caregivers will be required to attend any scheduled weekend Petco Events as well as once a week, one hour obedience training sessions through our Partnering Petco store closest to you with their Foster Animal as directed by AFTLOA. Decisions regarding training sessions will be made on a "case by case" basis and Foster Caregivers will have the leisure to schedule obedience training sessions based on their individual schedules. These requirements will not only allow for the Foster Animal to be seen by potential adopters, but will also offer a more positive, enriching, successful foster experience for both the Foster Caregiver and the Foster Animals.

Each Fostering household will be limited to ONE Foster Animal per household exceptions being in the rare event of a bonded pair, a nursing mother, or a litter of puppies under 8 weeks of age.

Once a potential Foster has been approved, the Foster Cargiver will then be required to sign a legally binding contract with our organization to ensure safety and care of Foster Animals as well as ensuring the Foster Animal's return to AFTLOA in the event a Foster Caregiver at any given time feels the Foster Animal is no longer suitable for their fostering home while agreeing to give 2 weeks ample notice for us to be able to find additional placement for the Foster Animal.

AFTLOA will assume responsibility and sole authorization of necessary veterinary and training expenses of Foster Animals incurred. We will provide a blanket, collar, harness, leash, a crate, and food for Foster Animals. All you have to do is open your hearts and home to an animal in need until such time they are adopted!

All Foster Animals will receive the following veterinary care prior toward entering a Foster Caregiver's fostering home:

*Physical Examination
*Spay/Neuter
*Required Vaccinations
*Micro-Chip (ownership under AFTLOA)
*Heart Worm Test
*Fecal Examination
*Health Certificate

Once a Foster Caregiver has been approved and selected for an animal in need of rescue, the animals will arrive at our "home base" here in South Carolina to be quarantined once we have them removed from shelter facilities as they await transportation to New Jersey. Once they arrive here they will go through a thorough temperament assessment process to ensure the Foster Caregiver and the potential Foster Animal are a suitable match. During their stay we will also work on basic needs and training to get them ready to enter welcoming Foster Homes. We will work on crate training, leash training, basic commands, socialization, ect. to ensure a successful, positive Foster experience.

If you cannot Foster an animal, please refer to the DONATE tab for ways to donate toward the basic specific needs of Foster Animals and to offer Sponsorship toward a specific Foster Animal by making a tax-deductible donation in order to help defray any costs incurred toward their basic care, veterinary care, or training!
